I Love My Body I Love My Environment – Fun Education on Hygiene and Environment for Elementary Schools I Love My Body I Love My Environment is a project initiated by young people in Kupang and Dili who are concern about the environment, especially the ocean around Indonesia and Timor Leste. Kupang and Dili produce 200 tons of trash each day, that means 400 tons of trash per day only from these two cities. Whales and other marine creatures died after consuming plastic waste that scattered around ocean in Indonesia and Timor Leste. We choose to start this project because we want to take action against the environmental issues and because our project can involve professionals, youth and children at the same time. We’re also concern about personal hygiene of children in both cities. Our goal is the behavioral change towards the environmental issue and better personal hygiene among people in Kupang and Dili. Where We Are Now We have united many youth communities in Kupang and Dili to address the same issue and did some environmental actions in both cities. Although we need to adjust our project to fit the different language, culture, reading readiness and local policies in both cities, we learn that youth in Kupang and Dili have same interest about caring the environment. Our first success story is that we were able to give direct impact to the environment in two different areas across countries through clean-up action. The second one is that we were able to unite youth communities from two countries to raise awareness towards environmental issue as well as personal hygiene and getting them ready for fun environmental and personal hygiene education in elementary schools. Author: Adren S. Nenobesi Celebrating Earth Day with an Environmental Action In the 27th of April, team Timor Eco Warriors joined a beach clean-up action together with MITRA Community and many other youth communities in Kupang. The action took place in Namosain Beach, about 6 kms from the central city of Kupang. This area is one of the most favorite places in Kupang to spend afternoon while watching the sunset. It is also very easy to access, located on the side of a road, makes it a perfect place to take a rest after jogging, or just to hang out with friends. However tough more and more trash appeared to be scattered along the beach breaking the beautiful view of the sunset. More ironically many people use this area to fish and sell their catch right on the shore. This situation triggered young people in Kupang to take action together, as a respond for the Earth Day on the 22th of April. Those young people who came from different youth communities joined together to take action for the environment. Sonia, one of the volunteer from Timor Eco Warriors said that This was a very impactful action to take, considering the great number of cases of overloading plastic trash in many areas especially in the coasts around Kupang. She hopes that trough this action they can somehow make the local people aware to not to throw trash into the ocean. She was also very glad that as a youth she could contribute to do a useful thing to the environment. There was also a very good message given from Elvy and Yuni, other volunteers who joined the action. After seeing the amount of plastic trash in the area they said, people should know that one plastic bag that they throw today will not be gone until more than 20 years in the future, they shouldn’t give trash as their legacy for younger generation. Instead a will to save the environment and positive education to the kids are much more promising for better future. The action took place from 15.00 pm until 17.00 pm made a significant difference to the beach. The beach that looked so dirty and full of plastic trash become much more cleaner and more appealing to the eyes. This activity was also makes the team members very happy because trough this activity, they could get know many new people and collaborate with them. They hope that there will be similar activities like this in the future”. So eco warriors, let’s take action to save the planet! Author: Adren S. Nenobesi Little Number, Big Desire to Make Change Alright warriors, the story began when our Project General Advisor met with some enthusiastic youth in Kupang in an event on World Clean Up Day 2018. These young people and Silvia Landa took a real action by picking up plastic bottles and cups from the top of Fatuleu mount, one of the highest point in Timor Island and one of the most extreme mount to climb. But these people made it to climb the tall rock mount and brought back about 10 big sacs of plastic trash that the tourist littered when climbing the mount. Looking at what happened in the environment, Silvia and these youth decided to make a change for the betterment of the environment. Silvia and her small team designed a project that would involve 3 elements from different generations; children, the youth and Education Institution such as school, and what makes it special in this project design is that it would involve youth, children and schools from Kupang and Dili Timor Leste! This project design was then named I Love My Body I Love My Environment and this small team name themselves Timor Eco Warriors because they take action is the Timor Island. This team sent the proposal to sent to YSEALI Seeds guess what, the project is approved! Take a closer look about YSEALI Seeds here: culturalvistas.org/articles/press-releases/2019-yseali-seeds-for-the-future-grant-recipients-announced/ Pre-Grant Workshop, Meeting Other Grantees from All Over South East Asia YSEALI Seeds for Future Grants, trough Cultural Vistas invited two group members to go to Jakarta in to join an event called pre-grant workshop for two days. Team Timor Eco Warriors delegated Adren as the Project Leader and Ana, the Project Secretary to join the workshop. It was wise for the team to invite Ana from Timor Leste to join so that face-to-face meeting between Kupang and Dili team member could be made. Long story short, Adren and Ana took off to Jakarta and join the workshop. Don’t worry, Cultural Vistas paid for the hotel and flight! They both met at Aloft Hotel at Walid Hasym Street Jakarta, the venue of the workshop. They were put together with the other participants from the 21 selected projects from all over South East Asia. That was a fun meeting because all of participant spoke different kinds of English that was influenced by their mother languages. Natalie from Cultural Vistas welcomed us as well as led the workshop. There were other members of YSEALI Seeds officials too. We did some fun games one of them was human BINGO. The workshop focused more about how to plan the effective budgeting for our project, the procedure of the funding, how to work on monthly reports, and even how to use YSEALI Seeds platform to promote our project. All the teams were told that that will be an opportunity to use almost all of the YSEALI Seeds 2019 social media account to promote our project in YSEALI Seeds Media Takeover. Just wait until Timor Eco Warriors take the turn! All the teams were given chance to present our projects in the front of other participants, and were given chance to supporting suggestions to each other. There was also time to sit together with other team members who had similar interest or field to share and find a way to cooperate with their projects. After all the discussion they present again their project and with more detailed information. In the last session they are visited by the previous YSEALI Seeds grantee from Indonesia who are now still running their projects. These alumni teams gave great supports and suggestions. Some even offered to cooperate. While in the workshop, they were asked to create a short video to describe and promote our project. With a very short time that we got, the team managed to create this simple yet beautiful video here web.facebook.com/adrenindonesia/videos/2696832463675302/. This was pretty crappy editing video but the team want to make better promotion videos later on. You can also help with suggestion on video editing or promotion ideas on the comment space bellow. The two days workshop was a great event, now The team is in contact with have Kurt from Vietnam with his Trashalive Project that we are working together with and Tan from Mianmar with her Teens and Dreams project. They were doing great projects and Timor Eco Warriors is collaborating with them in social media promotion. All of these things could be done because of the simple need of making change by some small number of people with the same dream. You can be part of this action by keep supporting us, share our stories and make your action be seen by others.
